The Fitness Center offers a variety of classes, including yoga, fitness 101, cardio dance and more. Best of all: Classes are FREE.


Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, masks are required while in the fitness center. However, most of our classes are available to view online on Microsoft Stream. Weather permitting, classes are held outside with social distancing guidelines in place.

Yoga — Using breath, posture, and movement, there is an opportunity to explore our bodies and minds using that deeper breath as a guide. Practice in this environment is full of playfulness, and even laughter, but it also affords a time for quiet inner reflection.

HIIT — High Intensity Interval Training involving clinically studied exercise methods. See what's on the HIIT list every Friday.

Matt's Bootcamp — Built for all levels. Improve cardiovascular endurance and muscle endurance.

Fitness 101 — One hour of an introduction to fitness. Low to moderate intensity, designed for those new to fitness!

Cardio Dance — Zumba-like dance fitness. Mix it up on Tuesdays!

Total Body Fix — A total body workout to tone and firm up. 

Butts & Guts — 30 minutes of gut busting, leg and booty sculpting work.

Meet our Instructors

Matt Chesley

Matt Chesley

HIIT, Bootcamp, and Butts & Guts Instructor – I am a NASM Certified Personal Trainer specializing in Fitness Nutrition, as well as the founder of the Detroit Mercy Biggest Loser. From January 2013 to June 2015, I lost 70 pounds and kept it off. I love teaching others about fitness and introducing new exercises to break the monotony of exercising the same way every week. I sing and play guitar and have played Hard Rock Cafe Detroit, St. Andrew's Hall and the Pike Room at The Crofoot. I have shared the stage with Everclear, Fall Out Boy and Chiodos. I am a graduate of Central Michigan University, class of 2009. I have three kids. Two girls and a boy.

Cardio Dance/Barre Strength Instructor – I have a B.F.A in Dance and Associate’s in Fitness Leadership, and my M.S. in Exercise Science. I have worked as a personal trainer and group exercise instructor for six years. I have taught classes in Zumba, senior fitness, spinning, kickboxing, total body strength, barre and yoga. I work in cardiac rehab as an exercise physiologist for Henry Ford Health System and in my spare time I enjoy running 5Ks, 10Ks, obstacle races like Tough Mudder and the occasional half marathon. This year I am signed up for my first full marathon.

Jim Stout

Jim Stout

Yoga Instructor – Jim joined Detroit Mercy in 1994 and also teaches at two yoga studios: Everyday Yoga in Royal Oak/Clawson, and Yoga Now in West Bloomfield. Jim is an avid runner and cyclist, having participated in marathons, long distance road cycling and mountain biking. Jim has the 200-hour certification as recognized by Yoga Alliance. He is also a certified spinning instructor.

Barraka Fitness 101 Instructor - I work in Cyber Security for Detroit Mercy. I am passionate about fitness for all. I DJ on the side.

Miranda Novak

Miranda Total Body Fix Instructor - I am a sophomore studying Chemistry for pre-dental. I started working out to get more toned, but ended up finding it helps with stress, mood, and overall happiness as well!
